“What do you mean we just can’t fire her?” This seminar is designed for managers and supervisors and will expose them to some of the collective agreement constraints within a unionized environment. It will also provide a framework for managing employees within the collective agreement and fostering positive labour relations, which is critical to a productive workplace.

Objectives: 

Upon completion of this seminar, participants will:

  • Be exposed to important employment, workplace health and safety, and human rights laws and legislation.
  • Gain an understanding of how to manage employees in a unionized environment, apply management rights fairly and consistently, and enforce company rules and regulations.
  • Gain an understanding of the rights and obligations of the union, the role of the collective agreement, and the stage at which management should involve the union.
  • Learn the importance of fostering positive relations with the union and building strong two-way communication.
  • Learn how to address different types of workplace issues and transgressions, including absenteeism, performance problems, insubordination, and dispute resolution.
  • Gain an understanding of the different stages of the grievance process from investigation, required documentation, union representation, and termination.
  • Learn how to work effectively within the arbitration process.
