This seminar provides practical skills and techniques for communicating effectively with the media. Participants will gain a better overall understanding of how the media works, why some reporters cover the news they do; and when and when not to seek media coverage in the news cycle. Furthermore, participants will learn how to pitch stories to attract positive media coverage and explore methods to mitigate negative coverage. A hands-on component will give participants the chance to implement a number of techniques including, crafting key messaging, selecting a spokesperson(s), performing media interviews and more.

Upon completion of the seminar, students will:
- Understand how the media works in a 24/7 news cycle;
- Learn how to influence positive media coverage;
- Develop skills to build partnerships with the media;
- Know the role of the spokesperson and his/her rights;
- Write key messaging and apply it to media interaction;
- Understand the needs and sensitivities in dealing with crisis situations;
- Explore the components of a strong media plan and learn how to develop consistent and key messages;
- Learn media protocol and how understanding it can facilitate better relationships with the media
- Gain the confidence to overcome nerves and deliver an effective media interview
