Additional Comments

This course requires you to work on computers outside of the University Of Winnipeg. You should have access to a computer connected to the Internet and it is recommended that you have a flash drive to store and transport your research and files. Provisions can be made for students to use the computers at the DCE Labs. Please contact the instructors for procedures and contacts.

Calendar Description

This course will introduce students in all curriculum areas to wireless technology information, the related skills that they will need to access and present information, and how to relate said information to everyday practices. Topics will include applications of wireless technology in both LAN and WAN environments, productivity considerations, remote connectivity and communication, software evaluation, along with prerequisite end?user hardware and software skills. A continuing parallel theme will be an emphasis on relevant technological theory with the integration of wireless technology into real world situations.

Backups

It is the student’s responsibility to retain a copy of all submitted assignments as backups. There are only two groups of people – those who have lost information and those who will do so. Plan to use flash drives or preformatted CD-RW/DVD-RW. Due to Megabit restrictions do not plan to use online storage sites. There is no guarantee as to restoration of lost files. Losing files without appropriate backup will prevent you from completing assignments for submissions on time.

Attendance

As this is online course, there are no scheduled classes at the University. There is a scheduled online discussion time every Wednesday from 7 to 8 pm to ask questions, become involved in web discussions and share information with the other students. Students are encouraged to participate in all discussions and class forums. Depending upon your background in wireless technology, plan to spend 3 to 4 hours/week doing additional research and reading beyond reviewing the online materials.

Important

Many materials will be made available online. Online materials will be viewed through the World Wide Web using most common browsers. Some documents will be available for download as PDF files, video presentations will be
saved in Quicktime format. All announcements, updates, and guidelines will be posted on the course WebCT site. Throughout the course, students are required to refer to the postings and the online course readings at the aforementioned WebCt site in order to prepare for various assignments in the course. Even with materials made available on the aforementioned site, students are also expected to do supplemental research and readings to enhance their knowledge of the topic for completion of the assignments.
