The purpose of this course is to introduce students to digital forensicstechniques, tools and scenarios. In this course, students are exposedto basic concepts such as evidence acquisition, processing andretention, Canadian and American legislation issues regarding digitalforensics. The course is designed to be conceptual in nature andprovides limited hands on experience in working with many of theconcepts presented

Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Be able to explain the core concepts of digital forensics
  • Achieve understanding of the evidence acquisition process
  • Identify relevant legislation and regulations
  • Distinguish between the various types of evidence
  • Describe process and hardware requirements for forensic response
  • Identify various file system structures and required evidence gathering techniques
  • Understand basic data hiding techniques
  • Use standard open-source and commercial tool sets for evidence acquisition
  • Conduct fundamental data analysis of acquired media
